As for the etiquettes he must observe, some of it has already been referenced in the story of Musa (the one who spoke to Allah) and al-Khidr, as alluded to in the clear text of the Qur’an.
The disciple’s struggle in this stage involves his patience in performing obligatory (prayers) until they are completed in their proper time, his endurance through the bitterness of the unfolding decrees of fate, his perseverance in the pursuit of virtuous deeds after fulfilling obligatory ones without becoming overly attached to them, and his restraint from succumbing to desires, pleasures, and laziness that the self may invite.
Allah, the Exalted, said: As for those who struggle in Our cause, We will surely guide them along Our Way.(29:69)
Allah, the Exalted, also said: Hold to this firmly (7:145), meaning with diligence and effort.
The essence of striving is patience.
Allah, the Exalted, said: And seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, it is a burden except for the humble. (2:45)
The true journey in this realm is the journey of the heart, which is thought.
However, the movements of the external appearances are blessings of the inner realities.
This journey can only be accomplished through the accounting of breaths and the regulation of the five external senses (taste, smell, sight, hearing, and touch) and the five inner faculties (the spirit, heart, soul, secret, and concealed).
Allah, the Exalted, said: And as for those who were in awe of standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from desires, Paradise will certainly be their home. (79:40-41)
Allah, the Exalted, also said: those who are certain that they will meet their Lord and to Him they will return. (2:46)
Allah, the Exalted, also said: Be mindful of the Day when you will be returned to Allah. (2:281)
